Bayou Bound Books approaches Southern Gothic horror through the lens of mental health, trauma, and real human experience. Founder Isabelle Herrscher (published as Isabelle McGee through August 2026) writes horror that draws on the psychological weight of everyday moments, the kind of fear that is unsettling precisely because it could actually happen. Rather than relying on monsters or supernatural shock value, the horror builds through atmosphere, emotional undercurrents, and the specific dread of familiar places that feel slightly wrong.

What is Southern Gothic horror?

Southern Gothic horror is a subgenre rooted in the American South that uses dark themes, decaying settings, psychological tension, and deeply flawed characters to explore the complicated history and culture of the region. At Bayou Bound Books it is approached through a modern lens focused on psychological and emotional dread that lingers long after the story ends.
